Spline and Gear Hobbing

Spline and Gear Hobbing

Hobbing is a continuous generating process that uses a helical cutting tool — the hob — to produce splines, spur gears, and helical gears with consistent tooth geometry across production runs. Unlike broaching (internal profiles) or milling (single-tooth cutting), hobbing generates the full tooth profile progressively and continuously — faster than shaping, more accurate than milling.
We hob splines and gears in 45#, 20# carbon steels, 40Cr, 35CrMo, 20CrMnTi alloy steels, 6061/6063 aluminum, 304 stainless steel, and H62 brass — with spline accuracy of ±0.01mm and pitch error ≤0.015mm. Diameter range Φ5–200mm. IATF 16949-certified.

Performance Highlights

Continuous generating for consistent tooth geometry

Unlike single-tooth machining, hobbing progressively forms each tooth profile in a continuous cutting action. The result: consistent tooth spacing, lead accuracy, and surface finish across full production runs.

Spline accuracy ±0.01mm

Precision indexing and controlled hobbing parameters deliver spline profiles within ±0.01mm accuracy and pitch error ≤0.015mm, ensuring uniform load distribution and reliable torque transmission.

Spur and helical gear capability

We produce straight-tooth spur gears for high-volume applications and helical gears for smooth, high-load transmission systems - with full tooth profile and lead control.

Broad material compatibility

Carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and brass are hobbed with optimized tool geometries and cutting parameters for each material.

High-volume efficiency

Hobbing is significantly faster than shaping or milling for gear and spline production. Combined with automated loading and live tooling, we support volume requirements across automotive and industrial applications.

Applications

Automotive Transmission Gears

Spur and helical gears for manual and automatic transmissions are hobbed with consistent tooth geometry and profile accuracy, supporting smooth engagement and load distribution across gear sets.

Steering System Gears

Helical gears used in steering racks and electric power steering systems require consistent lead accuracy and tooth form. Hobbing delivers the precision and volume required for these safety-critical components.

Splined Shafts and Hubs

Involute splines on shafts and in hubs are hobbed with ±0.01mm accuracy and pitch error ≤0.015mm - ensuring uniform load distribution and accurate centering of mating components.

Pump and Industrial Gears

Gear pumps, timing gears, and industrial drive components use spur and helical gears. Hobbing provides consistent tooth profiles and the fatigue resistance required for continuous operation under load.

Beyond Automotive

Why Hobbing

For splines and gears, other methods have distinct limitations:

Broaching – internal profiles only; cannot produce external gears or long splines

Milling – single-tooth cutting; slower, less consistent tooth spacing

Shaping – reciprocating cutting; slower, less efficient than hobbing

Hobbing delivers continuous generating action - faster than shaping or milling, and capable of producing consistent tooth geometry across long production runs. For spur gears, helical gears, and splined shafts - hobbing is the production method.
