Progressive Die Stamping

Progressive die stamping is a metal forming process that shapes sheet metal strip into finished components through a series of stations within a single die set. Each station performs a specific operation — piercing, blanking, bending, coining, or forming — as the strip advances with each press stroke. By the time the strip exits the die, the completed part is separated from the carrier strip. No secondary handling. No inter-station transfers. Just continuous, high-speed production.

Why Progressive Die Stamping

 

Stage tooling is sequential: each operation on its own machine, handling between steps, tolerances accumulating. Good for low volume, costly at scale.

Progressive stamping is continuous: the material strip never leaves the die until the part is finished. Every station is indexed to the same reference. Alignment is maintained by pilot pins, not by operator handling. Tolerances do not drift because there is no re-chucking.

Stage tooling – individual operations on separate presses. Handling between steps. Tolerances stack up. Labor cost per part is high. Suitable for volumes below 50,000 pieces per year .

Progressive stamping – all operations in one die, one press, one continuous feed. No handling. No tolerance stack-up. Per-piece cost decreases as volume increases. Suitable for volumes exceeding 50,000 pieces per year - and cost-effective well into the millions.
