A Brief Overview Of Broaching Processes

Broaching involves only one main motion: the broach moves linearly at a cutting speed *v* under the hydraulic pressure of the broaching machine. The feed motion is achieved by the structure of the broach itself, specifically by the sequential rise of each tooth. Broaching can be viewed as a planing process performed by multiple planing cutters arranged in a row of varying heights.

Broaching can machine various shapes of through holes, as well as various planes and shaped surfaces. Due to limitations in broach manufacturing processes and broaching machine power, holes that are too small or too large are unsuitable for broaching (broaching hole diameters are generally 10–100 mm, and the depth-to-diameter ratio is generally no more than 5). Blind holes, stepped holes, and thin-walled holes are also unsuitable for broaching. Broaching is primarily used in batch, mass production applications.
