Split Bushing

Split Bushing

Split bushings are cylindrical components with a continuous axial slot along their length, designed to compress radially during installation and expand into position upon release. This split configuration enables installation into closed bore housings without requiring press-fit tooling or disassembly of mating components, significantly simplifying assembly operations and field service.
Our split bushing line covers steel split bushings, precision split bushings, aluminum split bushings for automotive, cold extruded split bushings, and split bushings with precision bore, manufactured through cold extrusion combined with precision slot cutting. Available in steel and aluminum alloys, these bushings deliver consistent clamp force, reduced installation stress, and reliable retention in both original equipment and service applications.
This is an engineered split bushing solution — combining the structural integrity of cold-formed cylinders with the installation convenience of a split design.

Core Advantages

1

Split Design for Easy Installation - The continuous axial slot permits radial compression during insertion, enabling installation into closed bore holes without pressing or requiring assembly disassembly. Tabs or notches at the split ends can be provided for removal with standard service tools.

2

Self-Retention Upon Release - The spring-back characteristic of the bushing material - typically 0.05-0.15mm radial expansion after insertion - creates positive engagement with the bore wall. This self-locking behavior eliminates the need for adhesives, staking, or mechanical retainers in many applications.

3

Cold Extruded Core Structure - The cylindrical portion of the bushing is produced through cold extrusion, ensuring consistent wall thickness, dimensional accuracy, and work-hardened surface hardness. The extrusion process preserves uninterrupted grain flow, contributing to fatigue strength under cyclic loading.

4

Precision Bore Control - Internal diameters are maintained to tight tolerances - typically H7 or better - ensuring accurate fit with pins, shafts, or fasteners passing through the bushing. Bore surface roughness is controlled to reduce friction and wear on rotating or sliding elements.

5

Material Flexibility - Available in high-strength steel for maximum load capacity; aluminum alloys for lightweighting and corrosion resistance; and lead-free copper alloys for reduced friction. Each material is matched to the specific installation environment and load cycle.

6

Consistent Slot Geometry - The axial slot is cut to controlled width - typically 1-3mm - with square or radiused ends as specified. Slot placement relative to the bore axis is held to tight positional tolerances to ensure uniform compression behavior and consistent installed length.

7

Corrosion Protection Options - Steel versions accept zinc plating, phosphating, or Dacromet coatings. Aluminum versions are available anodized or chem-film coated to MIL or OEM specifications. Salt spray testing is offered for validation.

Quality Control

Forming Phase
Cold extrusion parameters are monitored in-process, with wall thickness and concentricity checked on first-off and hourly samples. Extrusion pressures are logged to detect tool wear and material variations.
Slot Cutting Phase
Slot width, position, and end geometry are measured on CMM or optical comparators. Burr height is controlled to 0.05mm maximum. The cutting process is validated through destructive sectioning at defined intervals.
Final Release
Each production lot is sampled for compressed and released diameter verification using go/no-go gauges or CMM inspection. Installed expansion is validated by measuring O.D. in free state and in compressed condition. Coating thickness and adhesion are verified per specification. Traceability links each finished lot to raw material batch and production parameters.

Application Scenarios

Shock Absorber Installation & Service

Split bushings are used at the connection point between the shock absorber lower bracket and the suspension control arm or axle housing. The split design allows bushing replacement without disassembling the control arm or axle - simply compress the split bushing, insert it into the bore, and release for self-locking retention. This feature is particularly valuable in aftermarket service scenarios, significantly reducing repair labor time.

Quick Replacement of Chassis Suspension Bushings

In control arm bushings, stabilizer link bushings, and other chassis suspension components, the split bushing design enables on-site replacement without a hydraulic press. For service facilities without press equipment, split bushings offer an alternative that requires no special tooling while maintaining reliable retention and clamping force.

Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicle Clearance Adjustment

In the equalizing beam suspension systems of heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment, split bushings are used for thrust rod and equalizing beam connection positioning. The self-locking characteristic of the split design maintains position stability under vibration while allowing rapid disassembly and reinstallation during service.
