Phosphating is a chemical conversion coating process that treats ferrous metal surfaces with a dilute solution of phosphoric acid and other chemicals, converting the metal surface into an integral layer of insoluble crystalline phosphate . The porous phosphate layer provides corrosion protection, improves paint adhesion, and serves as a lubricant-holding surface for subsequent forming operations . Zinc, manganese, and iron phosphate coatings are available, each with distinct properties .
